Shortly before Passover, Sephardic Bikur Holim hosted their annual pre-Passover food distribution event. Dozens of volunteers, both adults and children, packed hundreds of boxes for community members in need. SBH is home to one of Brooklyn’s largest kosher food pantries, and is a haven of sustenance for thousands of families all year long.
In attendance at the food distribution event were Ronnie Tawil, Sam Sutton, State Senator Simcha Felder, Councilman Chaim Deutsch, and David Heskiel, community liaison to Councilman Deutsch. City Council Speaker Cory Johnson was also present and enjoyed a tour of SBH’s food pantries that benefit our community members. Speaker Johnson even assisted with the packaging, as well.
Speaker Johnson and Councilman Deutsch were understandably impressed with SBH’s operations and pledged to continue supporting them.
From there, Speaker Johnson, Councilman Deutsch, David Heskiel, and city officials, including Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzales, went to MCU Park to observe firsthand and to assist in the operation of Chasdei Lev. Chasdei Lev is an organization on a mission to give back to our educators and their families in appreciation of their tremendous devotion to our children. Chasdei Lev accomplishes this by partnering with yeshivot, manufacturers, and distributors to provide food and household necessities for the families in a dignified and respectful manner. This year alone, over 3,100 rebbeim and their families each received over $2,700 worth of food, clothing, and household goods for Pesach, at a fraction of the actual cost. Chasdei Lev ensures that our community rebbeim are able to go into the holiday with peace of mind by alleviating the strain on their already tight budgets.
At MCU Park, 49 tractor trailers filled with Chasdei Lev’s hard-acquired merchandise were unloaded for distribution. Josh Mehlman, chairman, FJCC, played a crucial role in coordinating the distribution.
David Heskiel, NYPD clergy liaison, was on hand working with the NYPD 60th Precinct community affairs to ensure that all recipients arrived and left in a safe and timely manner during the distribution. Working in conjunction with Heskiel at the event was Councilman Chaim Deutsch, who works constantly with Heskiel on behalf of the community to meet its needs and concerns as they arise. “No one,” remarked Heskiel, “is more dedicated or works harder on behalf of our community than Chaim Deutsch. Councilman Deutsch and Speaker Johnson constantly make it a priority to help those in need in our community.”
