Religiously observant staffers and volunteers at Magen David Adom in Israel have received new cell phones that can be activated by using their teeth when responding to emergency calls on Shabbat and festivals. The cell phones are kept in a special holder with a thin metallic arm that the staffers can pull with their teeth to communicate with MDA stations. According to the head of Jerusalem’s Scientific and Technological Institute for Halacha, such a phone mechanism minimizes Shabbat and holiday violations so that religious users can feel more comfortable using the devices more liberally in their life saving mission. MDA recently began replacing their old beepers with cell phones using a global positioning satellite (GPS) system to help their staff find locations more quickly. Messages could also be viewed on the new cell phones without manipulating the devices.
