Recess, gym class and afterschool running can help kids do better in school according toa study published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. Taking fitness breaks during class, traveling to school by bike, and structured physical education classes can all help lead to better grades. The researchers found that kids who increased physical activity by an hour and a half each week had improved scores on spelling, reading and math. Exercise may improve kids’ behavior and ability to concentrate, or could increase blood flow to the brain and enhance their mood. The American Heart Association recommends two and a half hours of gym class a week and 20 minutes of recess daily and suggested that schools and parents should encourage both schoolwork and physical fitness.
